Thirteen-year-old Emmy Carrasquillo started seeing ghosts. Well, hollows, as she and her Aunt July, a fellow ghost-seer, like to call them.
Since living with her aunt while her journalist mom travels the world and remarried dad enjoys life with his new family, Emmy has learned how to spot hollows in a crowd, how to avoid their touch, and better yet, how to guide them to the afterlife. However, after encountering a confused drowning victim who was unable to speak, the pair are at a loss for how to help him move on.
In their efforts to find answers, they stumble on a cloaked, skeletal figure in the woods called The Soul Collector. This dark creature is brewing a sinister plan for their home of Dark Falls, New York, the town that wronged him three-hundred-years ago. And he is now hellbent on making a successor out of the family line that led to his demise: the Carrasquillos.
With the help of her aunt, her town’s sheriff, and the strange (but totally cute) new boy in town who, as it turns out, can also see hollows, Emmy must confront The Soul Collector. She must also find it within herself to accept not only her ability to see ghosts but the feelings of loneliness she can’t escape, placed there by her parents’ abandonment. If they fail, not only do they risk losing the town to The Soul Collector, but Emmy may just have to take his place and become the new ferryman for the dead.
